Last school- year I was invited by my children’s teacher to take part of a “Telling Tale Marathon”.
What everyone expected to see was me telling a nicely told story, a traditional storytelling session, but my idea was quite the opposite.
I wanted the students wrote down their own story, created by all of them working together in a collaborative way. I did this with nine plane and wooden dices.
Each side of each dice has an image and this image is the clue for each student to create one part of the common story. This task could be accomplished in many ways, it’s not rocket science but it’s effective. Can be use not just for telling tales or creative writing. You can use it to remember almost every content such as mathematical formulas, chemical elements, animals, science contents, historical dates, events, writers, etc. I’m gonna tell you my proposal. You can see now that it easy to involve all the classroom, every students can contribute from their own capacities and abilities
This Story Cubes task can be acomplished in many ways but I'm gonna explain you mine:
There are nine dice, with a total of 54 images. By rolling the dice, a different set of images is produced which can be used as the starting point for a story. Someone of the class has to roll the dice in the first place and start with the first sentence/ paragraph of the story. Then, ask a new child to continue the story by including another of the pictures. They usually prefer to roll the dice again. In my opinion that makes that more dynamic, so why not let them have a go. At the same time, one students must write down all his/her mates' contributions. We can caracterize him/ her in order to make the process funier. At the end when the story is finished we can choose all together a catchy title for it.
One variation could be to create a story or to learn a new content/ topic by peering work in classroom, mixing differents levels of abilities. We can begin or end our lessons by this, as an ice-breaking activity or as a way to resume all the information
The trick is that it isn't just a way to generate creativity, it's also an easy way for the students to remember the information and data using games methodology.
